The University of California was the victim of a hacker attack and had to pay a ransom in bitcoins, informs The Block.
Hackers were supposed to run malicious software that encrypted servers at the Faculty of Medicine. All important data thus became temporarily unavailable and the university had to come up with a solution.
The university said:
The data that was encrypted is important to some of the academic work we pursue as a university serving the public good,
We therefore made the difficult decision to pay some portion of the ransom, approximately $1.14 million, to the individuals behind the malware attack in exchange for a tool to unlock the encrypted data and the return of the data they obtained.
The university has not yet specified what data was encrypted, but so far it believes that medical records have not been revealed.
Apparently, the attack was carried out by a ranwomware gang that originally proposed a ransom of $ 3 million, the university responded with an offer of $ 780,000, but after negotiations paid $ 1,140,895.
The university continues to cooperate with the police and law enforcement agencies.
